Player is Ouroboros, an immortal creature. Player walks around a nondescript planet, planting flowers. Flowers bloom into spheres of energy that player uses to destroy evil Monoliths sapping into the planet's life force.

1D diversifier applies, as its point was about one-dimensional gameplay. Ouroboros can only move left or right in a straight line. If there was action in both X-axis and Y-axis, it would be a 2D game. As it is, it's a 1D game. While the sprites can move in a variety of coordinates in a 2D space, the actual gameplay action is in one dimension only.
