Ourocytosis
Ourocytosis is the end result of several ideas we tossed together at the beginning of the Jam. All revolved around different interpretations of this year’s Theme. Some of us wanted to keep the idea of eating things and becoming what you eat. Others wanted to use the self-consumption theme to trick enemies into destroying themselves. Yet others strayed further from the path and suggested having the player live through several generations on a common setting.
Although we all liked these ideas, we had several concerns regarding the scope and time frame, so we went back to the drawing board. Although much of this concepts would carry on to our final project, there was plenty to be cut.
We continued to trim and cut and change opinions until we finally drafted the snippets that follow. I personally believe the beauty of this process is that ultimately none of the original ideas made it to the final cut. And all of us are happy with it =)
Game Features
Followers - You start the game with a set amount of lesser microorganisms ("Karions") that follow your Leader ("Proteos") wherever you go. Karions are the source of your Proteos' power, and as such you must always be on the lookout to capture your opponent’s minnions while protecting your own.
Ourocytosis - To capture enemy Karions, you must surround them with your Proteos’ Tail. When you close the circle, any Karions inside it turn to your color and add their respective powers to your pool. Keep in mind your Trail is vaporous, and if you take too long to close the trap Karions can just permeate through it.
Power Overwhelming - Karions are the Source of the Proteii Power - Literally. There are 4 types of Karion, each related to a special ability. Having more Karions of a given type in your wake increases your power to use abilities. As you use each power, the Karions become drained and must be allowed to recharge. The player with the most Karions when the Timer runs out, wins!
Karion Types
- Type A Karions
- Amorphous blobs of goo. They excrete a neurotransmitter-disrupting toxin that hampers the mobility of surrounding Karions.
- Type B Karions
- Stocky and dense organisms. By suddenly contracting and expanding, they create powerful ripples that push nearby Proteii away.
- Type X Karions
- Slender and delicate. Their fragile frame stores fantastic amounts of energy, and can then use this energy to perform bursts of amazing speed.
- Type Y Karions
- Have a multitude of flagella squirming about them. This tendrils send out vibrations over the surrounding fluid that attract nearby Karions.
