IGDA Global Game Jam 2011 Expects Broadened Participation, More Locations
Sites Can Still Sign Up to Host Local Jams
LOS ANGELES – Nov. 15, 2010 -- The International Game Developers Association (IGDA) announced today that for the first time its Global Game Jam 2011 will be held in cooperation with the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), the world’s largest educational and scientific computing society. ACM serves its members and the computing profession with leading-edge publications, conferences, and career resources. IGDA is gearing up for a big worldwide roar Friday – Sunday, January 28-30, 2011 for this event.
Global Game Jams brings game enthusiasts together to make a video game in 48 hours. The host committee chooses a theme for each year and gives participants a few constraints. After that, they are on their own. The brief time span is meant to help encourage creative thinking to result in small but innovative and experimental games.
Schools and studios, as well as IGDA and ACM chapters wishing to host a Jam site, can still sign up to participate at http://globalgamejam.org/apply-ggj-2011
In 2010, its third year, more than 4,000 game enthusiasts in 139 different locations worldwide made over 900 games. At the end of the two day period, all games are posted on the Global Game Jam site for everyone to see and enjoy.
“We are elated that ACM will cooperate with us in 2011,” said Gordon Bellamy, acting executive director, IGDA. “We’re both looking at this as a pilot program that could expand activities between our two organizations.”
The GGJ will provide local organizers with tools to help set up a local event, hands on guidance, a web page on the GGJ site, local and international promotion of the event.
