Alan Porter Youngblood

Alan Youngblood is a video game journalist and indie game developer with a passion for networking with others in the game industry and envisioning innovation in games and life.

While at North Carolina State for his education, Youngblood also worked for their distance education department creating serious games and various other digital media. Youngblood started his own game developer, Matreya Studios, along with Jorge Rodriguez and Bryan Taylor which unfortunately dissolved in 2010. Their project, Calamity Fuse, was a Sci-Fi/Fantasy mashup of first/third person shooter with swordplay and magical abilities developed in Valve's Source engine. Since Matreya, Youngblood has been working on a couple of indie games: one an adventure/mystery game about rescuing a human trafficking victim and the other is a musically generated shooter. Youngblood has held various other jobs including designing park maps for North Carolina state parks' web reservation system, contract web design, teaching guitar lessons, tutoring, and counseling at the YMCA.

As an indie dev, Youngblood does a little of every discipline of game development. His main passion and fortes are art and design, although he has taught himself enough coding to make games on his own. Business-wise he enjoys marketing, managing (with new styles like ROWE), team building, teaching and PR. From Matreya and continuing education classes, Youngblood has learned about legal and accounting aspects of businesses as well.

Youngblood holds a Bachelors of Arts in Communication with a concentration in Media and a Minor in Art+Design from North Carolina State in Raleigh, NC.

His favorite games are: Final Fantasy VII, Xenogears, Metal Gear Solid 3, Deus Ex, Mechwarrior 2, Megaman X, Megaman 3, Okami, Metroid Prime 1-3, and Heavy Rain.

Outside of the gaming world Youngblood enjoys music of an eclectic variety. He plays guitar, bass, keyboard, sings and dabbles with other instruments like his djembe. He has performed as guitarist in the hip-hop band Inflowential and in the National Youth Choir at Lincoln Center. Youngblood has experience recording and editing audio with ProTools and Tracktion. He's a sucker for live music of just about any kind, and likes dancing as well. He knows at least the basic steps to foxtrot, waltz, cha cha cha, merengue, bachata, and shag (get your mind out of the gutter, we're talking the social dance originating in the Carolinas).

To stay active Youngblood enjoys running and swimming and occasional pick up games of basketball or football for exercise. He's a die-hard NCState Wolfpack fan and enjoys spectating many sports. He's also a big fan of the Carolina Hurricanes, Carolina Panthers, Indianapolis Colts, and the San Diego Chargers.

At his core, Youngblood is committed to social justice. He's a big advocate for quality of life and improving the human condition.
